Celebrating Global Heritage and Music Museum Week at IME
The Indian Music Experience Museum (IME) dedicated an entire week to cele- brating International Museum Day, observed globally on May 18th . This year, the theme set by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), ‘Museums for Education and Research,’ empha- sized the role of museums in promoting holistic learning.
Throughout the week, visitors were invited to explore the rich tapestry of Indian music, with a special focus on string and percussion instruments, lost traditions, and indigenous music. High- lights included learning about ancient instruments like the Yazh, uncovering the legacy of the tawaifs, and immersing in the music culture of the Solega people.
As part of the celebration, Vikram Sridhar presented ‘Strung Together,’ a captivating storytelling session. This interactive programme centered on India’s single- string instruments and community singing, offering participants a unique opportunity to engage with music in a deeply meaningful way.
The weeklong celebration reinforced the power of music and museums in fostering education, cultural appreciation, and community connection.
