Sarangi
The Sarangi is a bowed instrument originating in the Indian subcontinent. With roots stretching back over three centuries, the Sarangi has been a key part of classical, folk, and Sufi musical traditions. Traditionally played by the nomadic community of musicians, the Sarangi has evolved into a prominent accompaniment and solo instrument in Hindustani Classical Music, revered for its ability to emulate the nuances of the human voice.
A lecture demonstration was given by Sarangi artist Harsh Narayan. As a descendant and disciple of Sarangi maestro Pandit Ram Narayan, Harsh shared his insights into the journey of the Sarangi, from its role as an accompanying instrument to its status as a solo concert instrument in the Hindustani Classical Music Tradition. He was accompanied on the Tabla by Kedarnath Havaldar to perform alongside the demonstration.
