Artists In Residence At IME
Gilles Grimaitre
Our Swiss Arts Council Prohelvetia Artist in Residence from Switzerland recently completed his residency programme with the IME. A pianist, keyboardist, composer, performer and curator active in the field of contemporary creation, Gilles is a member of multiple ensembles and bands. During his time at IME, Gilles was studying and exploring the Carnatic oral tradition of Konnakol under the guidance of Konnakol maestro Somashekar Jois and learning to play the Mridangam at IME’s Learning Centre.
Gilles also conducted an interactive workshop for the Learning Centre keyboard students which gave them insights into his collaborative compositions and the process of composing melodic pieces.
Julius Gabriel
Julius is a saxophonist and freelance musician from Germany whose work focuses on the exploration of the saxophone. He uses extended playing techniques and investigates the multidimensional unfolding of the sound of his instruments through spatial and electroacoustics. At IME he will reconstruct an antique diatonic soprano saxophone along with a local instrument maker, play with local percussionists, make field/studio recordings, and take lessons in Carnatic saxophone.
