Celebrating the Backbone of Brigade: Our Labour Force
International Labour Day is a significant day observed to recognize and celebrate the efforts and achievements of workers. Tracing back to its origins, the concept of Labour Day evolved from the Labour Union Movement. This movement holds great significance for Labour Day as it grew out of the need to protect the common interest of laborers, in order to provide them with better wages, reasonable hours & working conditions.
While Labour Day in India is annually celebrated on 1st May, it has a different date of observance in other countries. For instance, in Bangladesh, Garment Sramik Sanghati, an organization working for the welfare of garment workers has requested that 24th April be declared Labour Safety Day in the memory of the victims of the infamous Rana Plaza collapse. Similarly, people in the Bahamas, observe Labour Day on the first Friday of June in order to ensure a long weekend for workers.
When it comes to Labour Day, Brigade Group has been proactively observing the occasion and have started multiple initiatives to help and support workers and laborers. Some of the key activities conducted are the Toolbox Talks, which are a series of regular or weekly talks by industry experts on safety awareness given to their laborers. In addition, Brigade has also conducted the safety week, an annual event which includes activities like a safety pledge taken by all the laborers, safety messages given by the project-in-charge to all employees, safety competitions, an exhibition, first aid & fire fighting programmes & an emergency drill training. They also give away the Helmet of Honour, an award presented for excellence in environmental health and safety.
Initiatives like these have helped Brigade to consistently win the ‘India’s Best Companies to Work For’ award which is recognized by ‘Great Place to Work’ and ‘Economic Times’. This is a prestigious award given to organizations that hold a global standard of maintaining a healthy office culture and vibe. These initiatives are not just restricted to the end laborers but have also been embraced at every level within the organization, ultimately enabling Brigade to bag ‘The Best Employer of the Year’ award, 8 years in a row.
Brigade is proud to be one of the organizations that include and hire people from all walks of the society irrespective of their caste, gender, religion, and designations. We ensure that all employees be treated with respect and dignity, in order to make them feel included and appreciated. Brigade Group has successfully managed to create a vibrant and positive office culture making it one of the best places to work at.
